During the 1946 General Assembly there was a need to establish order during the services. Bishop M.F.L. Keith, Chief Overseer and Senior Bishop, met with Elder A. B. Pike, Deacon Willie Walker and Deaconess Lillian Strouse to organize the National Usher Board.
This committee established the standards, which are in effect today:
- Must be modest and discreet
- Must be a godly protector of the Church
- Given to hospitality
- Knowledgeable of rules and regulations of the Church
- Maintains dignity in the sanctuary
- Ability to take charge in a moments notice
- Must be a member in good standing on the local and state levels
In the interim, Elder Willie Walker was appointed as president, and Elder James W. Morgan, Vice President. Following the passing of Elder Walker, Elder James Morgan was appointed President and Deaconess Lillian Strouse was named floor director. Upon the passing of Deaconess Strouse, Deaconess Ruby Lewis was appointed floor director; she currently serves in that position today.
